Headbands 4 The Homeless began in the winter of 2018 as a small but powerful grassroots initiative. While living in Oklahoma City, I saw firsthand the growing need for warmth and compassion among the homeless community during the freezing winter months. Though I didn’t have the financial means to give much, I had leftover yarn from my crochet projects. With it, I made 50 handmade headbands and personally distributed them to those in need.
What started as a simple act of kindness has grown every year thanks to the support of generous donors and volunteers:
2019: Raised $500 in one week, expanding efforts to include socks, gloves, and hygiene products alongside headbands.
2020: Raised $800, crafted 80 headbands, and delivered 60 fully stocked care packages.
2021: With $1,200 raised, distributed 100 headbands, 98 care packages, and donated extra supplies to shelters.
2022: Raised $1,500, creating 100 care packages and donating surplus items to local shelters.
2023: Raised $1,200, collected 75 headbands/hats, provided clothing for men and women, and distributed everything directly to individuals and shelters.
2025 (January distribution): Raised $1,600, curated 115 care packages, provided 50 headbands/hats, donated 13 lbs of clothing, and—thanks to a food sponsor—served 50 bowls of hot lemon chicken soup.
Now, as we prepare for our 8th Annual Headbands 4 The Homeless event on January 10, 2026, our mission is bigger than ever: to bring warmth, dignity, and hope to even more people experiencing homelessness.
We invite you to be part of this effort:
